The Teeth as They Relate to Estrogen Deficiency
Everyone can face the possibility of losing their teeth, if they fail to care for them properly. Research shows that post-menopausal women may be at an even higher risk than the rest of the population for developing periodontal (gum) disease, which ultimately may result in tooth loss.
The reason behind this disturbing fact can be found in recent studies that have linked low estrogen levels
(which occur in women who have gone through menopause) to periodontal disease. Post-menopausal women are also at risk for osteoporosis, a disease typified by the systemic loss of bone structure. Add low estrogen levels to the risk of osteoporosis , and the problem becomes even greater. One of the symptoms seen in women who are suffering from osteoporosis is that they may have less jawbone density. That decrease in bone mass increases the possibility of tooth loss. Risk factors for developing osteoporosis also include having a slight build, leading a sedentary life , being a smoker or heavy alcohol drinker and not getting enough calcium.
If you recognize these risk factors in yourself, it's important that you discuss these concerns with us. Allow us to teach you a daily dental hygiene routine which you can practice in conjunction with regular cleanings and check-ups. For post-menopausal women being forewarned is most definitely being forearmed and, as your dental services providers, we very much would like to be in your line of defense.
