Thumb Sucking
Thumb sucking is a natural "instinct" in infants. It should not be discouraged or the thumb-sucker ridiculed.
Such actions will only serve to make the child anxious. Pacifiers may be used to satisfy the need to suck,
but should be chosen carefully. Those with large plastic shields and vent holes are preferred. Pacifiers should
of course, never be looped or tied around a child's neck.
If children are left to their own devices, thumb sucking will usually disappear as the child grows and peer pressure increases. In some cases, thumb sucking may continue past the age of four or five. At this point it can create problems in the child's dental development. Should this be the case with your child, talk to us about the problem and we'll advise you as best we can.
