Thumb Sucking
Thumb sucking is a natural and normal desire. It oftentimes begins in the womb and should not be discouraged.
Ridicule only serves to make a child anxious and unhappy. It does not “solve” thumb sucking.
Primarily as a result of peer pressure, thumb sucking usually disappears as the child grows older.
In some cases, if thumb sucking continues past the age of four or five, it can create problems with dental development. Pacifiers may be used, as an alternative to thumb sucking, to satisfy the sucking desire. When choosing a pacifier, select one with a large plastic shield and vent holes. Never, ever, tie a pacifier around a child's neck.
