Periodontal Disease . . . Simply, Not Simple

What is it?
There are several types of periodontal disease. All are started by a bacterial infection that destroys the gums, bones, and ligaments supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease progresses silently, often without pain or overt symptoms, to alert you to its presence. It may develop slowly or progress rapidly. You’ll be on the defense if you keep an eye out for any of the following early warning signs. If you notice any one of them, make an appointment to see your dentist immediately.

  1. Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. Even just a little bleeding is not normal. If your toothbrush looks pink, see your dentist.
  2. Red, swollen, or tender gums
  3. Detachment (separation) of the gums from the teeth
  4. Blood that appears at the gum line when the gums are pressed
  5. Teeth that have become loose or changed position
  6. Any change in the way your teeth fit together (i.e., close) when you bite
  7. Any change in way partial dentures fit
  8. Chronic bad breath, or bad taste in your mouth

Protect yourself against periodontal disease with a good oral hygiene routine, regular dental visits and being wary of any of the warning signs listed above.
