Flossing for Effective Oral Hygiene

They are instrumental in the process of eating. They are an important asset to our appearance and we get only one set of adult teeth. No one can deny how important they are to us and yet, so many people fail to follow a simple routine that will help significantly to keep teeth in good condition.

Decay is caused by plaque, a sticky film made of food particles that are “mixed” with germs and settle on the teeth. This film releases an acid produced by bacteria that is believed to be the cause of tooth decay and gum disease. The best way that we have found to keep bacteria from releasing its harmful acid is to be extremely diligent in thoroughly removing any plaque that forms between the teeth. A procedure that should take place at least once a day (more if your lifestyle allows it) is flossing. Brushing your teeth will do a good job of cleaning the tops and sides of your teeth, but most dental disease begins in between the teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach. The simple solution is to partner brushing with flossing, proven to do the job better even than oral irrigating devices (i.e., waterpiks), albeit they are excellent for cleaning under fixed bridges or orthodontic appliances. The bottom line, as proven by research, is that regular and correct use of floss is the best choice for fighting gum disease, bar none.

Flossing doesn’t really take a great deal of time, considering the payoff when you do. To make flossing even more pleasant than it is, there are many kinds of floss available from which you can choose your favorites . . . waxed, unwaxed, flavored, unflavored, wide, thin and regular. There even are floss threaders which will help you to get the hang of flossing. When floss is not available, and only in very limited situations, the very careful use of a toothpick can “pinch hit.”

In the battle against gum disease, floss is your most important weapon, even more important than your toothbrush. Make it a part of your daily routine and you will enjoy the results. Don’t be embarrassed. If you can’t figure out if you are flossing correctly, one our staff will be glad to help you. Just ask.
