What To Do Until You See Your Dentist
Tooth decay is the primary cause of toothaches for most children and adults. Unfortunately, toothaches seem to appear just when you are unable to reach your dentist. You may, for example, find yourself on vacation, or out-of-town on business. There are, however, several things you can do until you get to see your dentist which may reduce your discomfort.
Use dental floss to remove any food particles which may have become wedged between your teeth.
Place an ice cube on the area of irritation. The cold will serve to temporarily numb the spot. Unfortunately, in some instances, ice may make the pain worse, so keep an eye on your reaction to ice.
Take an over-the-counter pain medication.
- Use an over-the-counter antiseptic that contains benzocaine. Apply it directly to the irritated tooth and gum. There is also a homeopathic “medication,” oil of cloves (eugenol), which, for some, may help when applied directly to the area of irritation or pain.
- Try using acupressure. Press the “offending” tooth up against the web of skin between your thumb and first finger and steadily direct pressure.
Of course, it’s important to mention that there is no substitute the professional care of a dentist. These suggestions are just temporary fixes. Also keep in mind that swelling, pain upon biting down, a foul-tasting discharge and redness are all indications of infection. See your dentist as soon as possible.
