Dental Care for Children - A Short Course

One of the best lessons you can teach a child is proper oral health. Taking good care of teeth helps them look better and last longer. Here are some simple steps which can keep your children’s teeth clean and healthy.

  1. Brushing:
Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, after breakfast and before bedtime. A toothbrush with soft bristles is preferable. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months. The best toothpaste choice is one which contains fluoride, which will help prevent cavities and keep teeth strong. Brushing should take at least three minutes. Gentle brushing, with a circular/back and forth motion. Light tongue brushing also helps to keep the mouth clean.
  2. Floss:
Teeth should be flossed thoroughly every day. Flossing helps clean in places that a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing may be tough to teach, so, if you wish, ask your dentist or dental hygienist to show your child how.
  3. Eat Healthy Foods:
The best snacks, like fruits, vegetables and milk are some really healthy alternatives to candy and sugary drinks. Proper eating habits not only help teeth, but also work toward preserving general good health.
  4. Dental Visits:
Regular checkups and routine cleaning and examinations will keep you ahead in the Health Teeth “game.”

Help your child to develop good oral health habits. Set an example for them to follow. It’s an investment that will pay off many times over for you and your children!
