Your Child's First Visit to the Dentist

One of our most frequently asked questions is, "When should a child first visit the dentist?" While there is a difference of opinion as when is the best time to start dental care, earlier is better than later. The earlier regular care begins the easier it is to prevent problems. In most cases by the age of three, there are few problems and the first dental visit can be very relaxed. The hygienist will clean the child's teeth and apply a fluoride treatment. Then the dentist will evaluate and discuss any concerns.

A first dental visit may include X-rays to see whether the facial bones and teeth are developing properly and to detect any hidden decay. During the first dental visit we also discuss proper brushing techniques and the application of sealants to reduce the chance of future decay.

A good way to begin your child's dental experience is to bring your child to the office with older siblings or to your cleaning so the office becomes a familiar place. If you are an anxious dental patient try not to convey your feelings to the child. It is usually best to make dental appointments for your young child in the morning when they are rested. Morning appointments do not conflict with mealtime or naps. Call our office at (845) 679-2421 for more information about dental care for your infant and young child.
