TMJ: A Not Uncommon Problem

The TMJ is the Temporomandibular Joint. This the joint between the Maxilla (upper jaw) and the Mandible (lower jaw). There is a cavity with a fibrous disc that separates the joint into two cavities. ( The disc is about the size of a Lifesaver, but without the hole). It is located in front of the ear.

You can easily locate the joint by placing your finger directly in front of your ear and then opening and closing your jaw. The disc is biconcave in shape, thicker at each end. When the shape of the disc is lost the disc may become dislocated and pain will result.

You may suffer from TMJ dysfunction if you have persistent headaches, clicking and popping in the joint, neckaches, backaches, earaches , ringing in your ears, or any combination of the above. Pain from TMJ dysfunction may debilitating. TMJ appliances can be made to help you with any of these symptoms. If you think you may be suffering from TMJ dysfunction, we would be happy to meet with you for an evaluation.
