Oral Cancer ~ Keeping a Watchful Eye
Fortunately, most oral sores or lesions are not harmful. But a number are dangerous and, if not identified early, may progress to a more advanced stage. The good news is that when oral cancer is detected early, by your dentist, it can be completely cured.

Oral cancer is a devastating disease, when detected in its later stages. Late stage treatment usually involves major facial surgery and only half of such patients survive past five years.

That is why it is especially important for you to see your dentist regularly, so that any dangerous oral lesions can be detected early, at a stage when they are most easily cured. Regular dental checkups, which include an examination of the entire mouth, are an essential factor in the early detection of both cancerous and precancerous conditions.

There is a quick, painless test that can accurately identify which oral lesions may need further treatment. The test is a brush biopsy that your dentist can use on lesions in your mouth to determine if there are potentially dangerous (cancerous of precancerous cells) present. The test does not require anesthesia and causes minimal to no bleeding or discomfort. In the majority of cases the sample obtains will be normal. The lesion may need to be retested periodically if it persists or changes.

Oral cancer occurs more frequently in those who use tobacco, in any form, and in those who consume large amounts of alcohol, but, it can develop in people of all ages, races, and lifestyle habits. More than 25% of oral cancers occur in people who do not smoke and who drink only socially.

Preventive care is important. See your dentist at regular, six-month intervals so that any oral lesion that us found can be promptly evaluated.
